Canoe Landing

Charles Eastman Canoe Landing

The Charles Eastman Canoe Landing is another hidden gem in our area that is an under-utilized, beautiful destination and must-see.

History of the Canoe Landing

In 2014, the Charles Eastman Canoe Landing project was kicked off with the funding established for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The project included the removal of buckhorn and other invasive species throughout the area in partnership with a Conservation Corporation of Minnesota. The parking area, the trails throughout the site, campsites and the river access had invasive plants removed and a player of crushed granite, a vegetation barrier and more crushed granite laid for accessibility for everyone. This place to visit in Morton is located along the Minnesota River.

Amenities Available at the Canoe Landing

During the construction of the canoe landing, a picnic shelter was created out of the rock outcropping with the perfect view of the river. In order to ensure full accessibility to the canoe landing, a new road was added to the existing city street, paved parking was added and a sidewalk path to the shelter was built. An amphitheater style classroom was moved to the canoe landing site; created from several large granite blocks that were mined in Morton. If you are traveling up or down the Minnesota River, you will have a place to stay for the night at one of our first come first served campsites. You can even enjoy a local favorite fishing spot as you rest, if you choose.

Campsites at the Site

There are three rustic campsites available at the Charles Eastman Canoe Landing. Each campsite has crushed granite as a base and a fire ring. Internal trails throughout the site connect the canoe landing and unloading area with the Minnesota River access, campsites, shelter and the classroom.

For reserving a campsite spot, the amenities are currently on a first come first served basis. This is subject to change by the City Council if campsite spots are not picked up after use. Please help us keep the honor system in place by doing your part to clean up after yourself and take your own trash home.
